Mumbaikars Transforming Umbrellas into Stunning Canvases: A Creative Trend!

This monsoon season, Mumbai is experiencing a vibrant and refreshing twist. Art workshops centered around umbrella decoration are fostering community spirit through creativity, joy, and the whimsical atmosphere typical of rainy days. Participants ranging from children to grandparents are joining in on the enjoyable activity. Beyond mere crafting, it's an opportunity for connection and artistic expression, offering a playful therapy for those gloomy weather days.“We utilize acrylic paints that are resilient and resistant to weather conditions.” These workshops, organized throughout the city, equip participants with all necessary materials—from unembellished umbrellas to a variety of paints and brushes. Under the expert guidance of seasoned artists, attendees acquire skills to enhance simple umbrellas into striking and functional art pieces. Swati Sanghvi, who operates an art studio in Khar, shares, “Umbrella painting is distinct due to the umbrella's shape, surface, and usability. It offers a contrasting experience compared to working on canvas or paper. The fabric composition adds a layer of texture and a uniquely curved surface, which presents its own set of challenges. We apply durable and weather-resistant acrylic paints.”Transforming Your Umbrella into a CanvasChoose an umbrella with fabric rather than plastic. Use masking tape to create an eye-catching pattern on the umbrella. With the umbrella taped, fill the open spaces between the tape with an assortment of beautiful acrylic paints. Allow the umbrella to dry for 2-3 hours. After drying, peel off the tape and tidy up the edges of each painted area using black acrylic paint. Rather than throwing them away, they can be reimagined into something beautiful and functional,” states Drashti Snehal Mistry, who teaches umbrella painting at various studios throughout the city. The workshops are enjoyable for both kids and adults alike. “I joined one with my ten-year-old son, and we had an absolute blast,” shares Beena Goila, a homemaker from Sion. Photos: Prashant Jadhav
